The Tick of a Snug Peg
By Lou Varga
Everything begins with a story.
The first time I heard that pronouncement I was determined to find out if it was true. Whether stories are shared around an open fire under the stars or read silently with book in hand, each unfolding sentence begins a change within you. Be it fact, fiction or tales of the past, present or future. Much to my satisfaction the statement has proved to be very true and the search for that truth has led me here.
Words are important. They are probably the world’s most powerful tools of expression. Words can declare love and spread hate, sustain cultures and degrade hope, build nations and collapse dreams. The intent of the one employing the words will make the difference, and you have the responsibility of interpreting their meaning.
The title of this blog is an example of one of the most insignificant details of my daily life, and maybe yours. It’s the muted sound (a tick) made by lifting my garments for the day off of a rounded wooden peg set tightly into the top of my bathroom door. The peg’s snug fit allows for just a hair-thin tolerance into its mortised home, but still enough movement to offer a nearly unaudible sound when relived of the clothing’s weight. Quotidian for sure, but it may give you the reader some insight into my high regard for observation in search of experience.
